Welcome to taste a little of the summer... take a look around and enter to win!

WELCOME!  We're so glad you're here.  You've probably found your way here via minnesota:madre or Young Ones, if not, be sure to stop by and visit us in our regular blogging homes!

We're Sarah and Kerry, two mamas who are enjoying summer veggies and herbs from a CSA called Common Harvest out of Osceola, Wisconsin.  We're hoping that this blog will be a place to collect and share great recipes and ideas on how to use up all of our veggies.  Please take a look around and see what we have to share so far.

In honor of our new blogging adventure and our love of CSA and local, seasonal produce in general, we are giving away a  fabulous cookbook.  This cookbook can help you learn to love every last item in your CSA box, or at least learn something about it and how you can prepare it!

From Asparagus to Zucchini

To enter our giveaway, just leave a comment telling us what your favorite local summer veggie is.  If you'd like, you can even tell us how you like to prepare it.  We'll take entries until  midnight on Sunday, June 20th.  We'll draw a winner at random and announce the winner on Monday.

  1. OMG. I love your new blog idea, you guys. I just got my third CSA box this week and the lettuce is overwhelming me. Lettuce wraps, why didn't I think of that? My fav so far has been broccoli rabe but I cannot wait for the cherry tomatoes.

  2. What a cool idea! We're still waiting for a CSA to start up in our area, but my garden should provide more than enough to try out some of your ideas. My favorite summer veggies are tomatoes and corn.

  3. Ooo Please! We shop at our farmer's market almost exclusively during the summer. Yum!

  4. Congratulations on your shared blog! What a lovely idea, I look forward to finding inspiration here! It certainly is hard to chose just one favorite from the garden as it truly feels as if we are 'eating for the first time' when eating something so fresh! I love picking peas and eating them right there from where they grow! I planted 50 tomato plants this year a few different varieties so I think this will (have to) be my favorite : ) I hope to create salsa, and tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes with oil and basil... Each year at the end of the season we pull up all of our root veggies and cook up a big meal of them with a bit of oil and herbs I can still remember how good they taste from last fall.

  5. Wow, what a great idea for a blog! We've never gone the CSA route because they've been to far away, but we visit our Farmer's Market each weekend and stock up. I grew up in northern MN, where the veggies were plentiful! My parents had "his and hers" gardens. To be PC, I will pick one veggie from each. My dad loves on his asparagus like his dad did. It is the original patch, going on 70+ years. There is absolutely nothing better than asparagus from the garden. It has a "bite" to it that the measly asparagus in the store doesn't have. We eat it every way you can think of, including raw! From my mom's garden I'd have to say her carrots are my favorite. The key is to pick one, wipe it on your pants and eat it right there. It sounds odd, but the slight hint of soil really adds a richness to the sweetness of the carrot. Oh, I could go on and on, but I'd be writing a novel! I can't wait to check out more of your blog. Thank you!

  6. Great idea, y'all! My "local" is quite different from yours, but this is our second, and even more ambitious, year of vegetable gardening. I'd say that our most eagerly anticipated item is the okra. We pickle them in the fridge and the kids walk around all summer with okra pods in their hands.

  7. what a great idea ladies! Well, my favorite veggie? That's hard. I'll say that one of my favorite veggies is okra. The kids love them cooked with cornmeal.

  8. This new blog looks great!! I love the sweet corn. Nebraska is known for corn and we do it right with the farm stands on the side of the road all summer. There is not much that tastes better. We boil or grill it and then use butter, salt, and pepper and eat it up.

  9. This is a fabulous idea to share a blog! I would love the book perhaps that will give me the extra push to actually buying at farmers markets or finding a CSA (or figuring out how it really works). Pick me, pick me! I would have to say that my favorite summer veggie is sweet corn or a good red tomato on a BLT!

  10. Great idea! I've always wanted to try a CSA, but it is a little too many veggies for just me. Maybe some day I'll eat enough veggies on a daily basis to make it worth it. No need for me to be entered, just wanted to say great start and good luck!

  11. Haven't tried the CSA route yet, so no need to enter me in the giveaway either - I'd rather see someone get lots of use out of the book right away! Excited to follow this blog for some recipe ideas nonetheless. :)

  15. I'm really looking forward to your new blog and all the fun ideas that come up with to use your veggies.
I LOVE fresh veggies and love coming up with new ways to use them. Sme of my favourite summer foods are, gazpacho and bruschetta. Both are best when they use the freshest ingredients. But my favourite summer veg is the humble zucchini. So many people dismiss it...but I love it sauteed with olive oil, garlic and oregano...then I grate mozzarella on top and let it melt....oh yum!

  16. I've just got to enter! Basil. I think the fresh and sultry flavor of basil really makes for some transformative flavor-ness. But... technically not a veggie, so I will definitely go with asparagus - a vegetable that I've only recently come to love, but boy have I ever fallen hard! Looking forward to this blogging adventure, Sarah!

  18. Awesome new blog.

My favorite: kohlrabi. I like to dice it, steam it, and then top it with a little bit of butter and parmesean cheese. Yummy!

  19. Hey there, I'm in Wisconsin too. I live in the village of Sauk City.

I am a vegetable freak. My favorite food group, hands down.

My favorite summer vegetable is probably heirloom tomatoes. Sweet corn would be a close second, but yeah ... yummy, homegrown heirlooms. :)
